If you’ve ever been elbow-deep in a box of LEGO® bricks—especially well-loved, older ones—you might have noticed something strange: it’s nearly always the brown ones that crack, snap, or shatter. You’re not imagining it, and it’s not just bad luck. There’s actually a very good reason for it!
The Science Bit (but not too sciency!)
Back in the early 2000s, LEGO® began producing more earthy tones like reddish brown, dark red, and dark green to add realism to their growing range of themed sets—especially Star Wars, Harry Potter, and LEGO® City.
To get those rich, deep colours, LEGO® had to tweak their plastic formulas. Unfortunately, this darker colourant mix made some of the bricks—particularly reddish brown and dark red—much more brittle. Rather than bending slightly under pressure (as LEGO® bricks usually do), they’d just snap. Cue many a frustrated builder wondering why that one brown arch piece keeps crumbling in their hands!
The Good News
LEGO® noticed the issue too. After a lot of feedback from fans (and probably some very expensive design reviews), they quietly corrected the formula around 2018. Bricks produced since then are much more robust—so if your brown pieces are breaking, they might just be from an older set. Time for an upgrade!
